The Duchess of Sutherland Cripples' Guild

The Duchess of Sutherland Cripples' Guild was started in 1900 by Millicent, Duchess of Sutherland. It actually began life as the Potteries Cripples' Guild  before becoming the Duches of Sutherland Cripples' Guild around 1907.

The Guild was formed in an attempt to take some definite action on behalf of the crippled children from the Staffordshire Potteries. At this time many children worked in the Potteries which were notorious for their unsafe working practices.

Metalwork in the Arts and Crafts style was produced by the Guild from around 1902 and eventually there was a London showroom selling a wide variety of very well made copper, silver and silver plated items.

Very little information exists on the Guild, but from the literature I have gathered so far, I know there is a fascinating story to tell. This website will be dedicated to gathering and sharing information on the guild and their contribution to the Arts and Crafts Movement.

This site will be developed during 2014 but I am very interested in hearing from anyone who has any information on the Guild that they are willing to share. I am also keen to develop a picture gallery of items made by the Guild so please contact me if you are willing to share images of items you may have.
